Which distribution should I pick?
Ubuntu is the most popular choice, with the most guides and packages. Debian is light and stable. AlmaLinux and Rocky Linux are Red Hat compatible and suit software built for that family.

On Windows 10/11, macOS and Linux run ssh root@YOUR_IP in a terminal; the password is shown in the panel. You can use an SSH key instead of a password.
