How to Connect to a Windows VPS with Remote Desktop (RDP)
Connect to a Windows VPS with Remote Desktop from Windows, macOS, Android and iPhone; change the Administrator password, keep apps running and fix common RDP errors.
Login details
Once your Windows server is created, the panel shows its IP, the user name Administrator and the password. Remote Desktop uses port 3389. Windows takes a little longer to install than Linux; if you can't connect right away, wait a few minutes.
From Windows
- Press Win + R, type
mstscand press Enter. - Enter the server IP under Computer and click Connect.
- Sign in as
Administratorwith the password and accept the certificate warning.
From macOS, Android and iPhone
Install Microsoft's official Windows App (the new Microsoft Remote Desktop) from the App Store or Google Play, add a PC with the server's IP and sign in as Administrator.
After your first login
- Change the password: press Ctrl + Alt + End inside the session and choose Change a password. Changing a Windows server's password from the panel isn't supported, so keep the new one somewhere safe.
- Install updates: Settings, Windows Update.
- Keep your apps running: close the Remote Desktop window (disconnect) instead of signing out, so programs such as MetaTrader keep running on the server.
Common errors
- Remote Desktop can't connect to the remote computer: Windows is still installing, the server is off or the IP is wrong. Check the server status in the panel.
- The credentials did not work: type the user name exactly as Administrator and make sure the password has no extra spaces.
